We ask questions – a lot of them; potential solutions are cultivated together as we gather information. When I was first asked what I learnt from my MBA degree I was surprised at my answer : “I learnt to ask the right questions.” It’s incredible what can be revealed when the conversation is steered down previously unexplored roads.

A business plan is a formal written document containing business goals, the methods on how these goals can be attained, and the time frame within which these goals need to be achieved. It also describes the nature of the business, background information on the organization, the organization’s financial projections, and the strategies it intends to implement to achieve the stated targets. In its entirety, a business plan serves as a road map that provides direction for the business.

A start up with a single employee who needs guidance for a productive action plan and a start-up looking for a comprehensive business plan to attract investors will require different solutions. Business plans are decision making tools. Preparing a business plan draws on a wide range of knowledge from many different business disciplines: finance, human resource management, intellectual property management, supply chain management, operations management, and marketing, among others. It can be helpful to view the business plan as a collection of sub-plans, one for each of the main business disciplines; Switchboard consulting has gathered a global family of specialists.
